What Kind of Auto Insurance Does PEI Have?

Prince Edward Island operates on a no-fault system, meaning each person involved in a collision deals with his or her own insurance provider regardless of who caused the incident.

Mandatory Auto Insurance Coverage in PEI

In Prince Edward Island, it is mandatory for drivers to have the following minimum coverage:

  • Third Party Liability - Protects you if you cause a collision resulting in injuries or fatalities, or damages to someone else's property. Minimum required liability coverage is $200,000, but most drivers in PEI opt for $1 million.
  • Accidents Benefits - May cover you (or anyone else entitled to this benefit under your policy) if you're involved in an accident regardless of who is at fault. This could include medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, loss of income, funeral expenses and possibly death benefits.
  • Direct Compensation - Property Damage - Covers repairs to your vehicle if you're involved in a collision in which you're not entirely at fault and at least one other driver involved is also insured in PEI. Amount payable varies depending on the extent of your involvement. (Mandatory as of October 2015)
  • Uninsured Automobile Coverage - Covers you if you're involved in a collision with an uninsured driver or unidentified vehicle (coverage does not include damages to your vehicle caused by a hit-and-run, but does include recovery damages if you're seriously injured).

There are also multiple optional coverage options available such as specified perils, which covers losses against named risks such as fire or theft, or comprehensive, which protects you against specified perils as well as damage to your vehicle caused by fire, theft and vandalism. Talk to your provider about additional coverage today.

Graduated Licensing in PEI

Young drivers are sometimes subjected to higher car insurance rates because insurers tend to see drivers with less experience as higher risk. But that doesn't mean a young driver has to pay sky-high rates. This article can help you find a better rate no matter what stage you're at in your driving career.

Now, there are three stages in PEI's graduated licensing program. Restrictions apply in all stages and details can be found listed under the Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy's website.

Stage 1) Beginner drivers aged 16 and older can apply for an Instruction Driver's Permit (class 7) licence. Similar to other graduated licensing programs in the country, this permit allows beginners to drive under the supervision of an in-car instructor (a licensed driver with at least four years of experience). This permit expires after two years.

Stage 2) Drivers with the Learner's Permit can take a road test after 365 days (or 275 days if they have completed a certified driver's education course) in order to receive their stage 2 (class 5) licence. This licence allows drivers to operate a vehicle without an instructor, but again there are restrictions.

Stage 3) After 365 days, drivers without suspensions automatically graduate to this level. After one year, a stage 3 driver can apply for a class 1, 2, 3 or 4 driver's licence.

For all stages, the use of a handheld device while operating a vehicle is prohibited by law and the driver and all passengers must be wearing a seatbelt. Otherwise, fines, demerit points and suspensions may apply. Multiple offences may revoke your licence.

Factors That Go Into Determining Your PEI Auto Insurance Rate

Your premiums are based on a number of variables including:

  • Where you live
  • How long you have been insured
  • The type of vehicle you drive (model and make)
  • Your claims history
  • Your insurance provider's claims history
  • Whether you've taken a certified driver's training course
  • Your personal driving record (tickets, suspensions, fines, etc)
  • How often you drive
  • The usage of your vehicle (if you use it professionally, for example)
