On December 1, 2011, Citizenship and Immigration Canada launched the Super Visa. Available to the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, the visa-which is valid for up to 10 years-allows family members who live abroad to visit for up to 2 years at a time.

One of the eligibility requirements for the Super Visa is having private health insurance.

When applying for the Super Visa, applicants must provide proof they've purchased a policy that:

  • Comes from a Canadian insurance company
  • Is valid for a minimum of one year from the date of entry into Canada
  • Covers health care, hospitalization and repatriation
  • Provides a minimum of $100,000 in coverage
Just like any insurance policy, what it costs can vary significantly if you don't shop around and compare quotes.

How much could you save? Look at the savings potential between the highest and lowest Super Visa health insurance quotes.
On October 10, 2013 for a 1-year policy with $100,000 in emergency medical coverage

55-year old individual $531.26
55-year old couple $753.36
60-year old individual $785.66
60-year old couple $1124.20
65-year old individual $930.20
65-year old couple $1299.40

Getting and comparing competing quotes is just one way to save money on the emergency medical health insurance needed for a Super Visa.

Tip: Compare Super Visa health insurance quotes from competing companies. Buying a policy from a company that isn't the right fit could end up costing you hundreds, if not thousands, more than necessary.

Another way to save money is to buy a policy with a deductible. A deductible is the portion of an insurance claim you agree to pay; your insurance company covers the rest. As a result, policies with a deductible cost less to buy than those that don't have a deductible. By purchasing a policy with a deductible, you can minimize your out-of-pocket expense now rather than in the case of a "what if"? Keep the deductible affordable though, because it will have to be paid in the event of a claim.

Tip: Compare policy prices with and without deductibles. Sometimes policies with deductibles save you more than the amount of the deductible itself.
