Steer clear of distracted driving as of September 1, 2011

Starting September 1, 2011 driving distracted in Alberta could earn you a ticket if caught.

Distracted driving isn't just about taking phone calls, texting or playing with your GPS system while driving; it's also about eating, putting on make-up, and shaving. A good rule of thumb to drive by is if it requires that you take your eyes or attention away from the road, it can wait.

While driving, beginning September 1, drivers will be restricted from:

  • Using hand-held cell phones
  • Texting or emailing
  • Using electronic devices like laptop computers, video games, and cameras
  • Programming MP3 players, or entering information into GPS units
  • Reading printed materials like newspapers and novels
  • Writing, printing or sketching
  • Grooming themselves
No matter where you are driving in Alberta, whether it is on an urban or rural road, drivers caught driving distracted may face a fine of $172.

Safer driving makes dollars and sense too

Safety comes first, of course, but don't forget the affect that driving distracted and its potential consequences can have on your Alberta auto insurance rates. Drivers without tickets typically pay less for auto insurance. It's as simple as that.

As your driving instructor used to say, keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. It's not only safer; it will save you money in the long run.
