Transition seasons-spring and fall- tie for the dubious distinction of being Canada's accident season.

Car accidents occur throughout the year and can always be dangerous, but according to Kanetix.ca more accidents occur during the months that transition us from winter into summer, and summer into winter.

Of all the car accidents disclosed while getting car insurance quotes at Kanetix.ca in 2012, 25.6 per cent occurred in the spring months (March, April and May) and in the fall months (September, October and November).

How do the seasons stack up against each other?

You're in the driver's seat all year long

No one wants to be involved in a car accident, no matter what the season. If you are however, do you know what to do if you are in an accident? The following are a few tips to help you be prepared, just in case:

  • Stay calm and keep your safety in mind at all times.
  • Report a car accident to the police if someone is injured or if the damage is over the provincial limit.
  • If the vehicles are driveable, and it is safe to do so, move them to the side of the road. If you are unable to move the vehicles set up warning signals or flares.
  • If possible, take photos of the accident scene.
  • Take note of the: time and date of the accident, location, driver names, contact details (phone and address), insurance information, make/model and licence plate numbers of all the vehicles involved, and the contact details for all vehicle occupants and witnesses.
  • Call your insurer as they can often walk you through all of the steps necessary.
Spring and fall are, at least in this writer's mind, two of the best seasons in Canada; it's not yet construction season (AKA summer) and there's no bone chilling sting to the air. Even if you disagree, I'm sure we can all agree that once in a while we all need to be reminded to enjoy the drive, stay focused and drive carefully.
